I’m writing today from Sanibel Island, Florida, which is basically paradise on earth. Seriously, if you look up “paradise” in the dictionary, I’m pretty sure that you could find a picture Sanibel next to it.
I’m super excited to be here for two weeks, swimming in the ocean, reading my suitcase full of books, eating at my favourite restaurant R.C. Otter’s (they make the best shrimp and spicy fries ever), and of course blogging and working, too. A freelance writer/editor works wherever they go, which is fine with me since I’m pretty much a workaholic (but in a super positive sense, because I love what I do).
Today I’m sharing my Banana Pie Smoothie, which makes a great sweet breakfast or afternoon snack. It’s sweetened with two dates, which are my new obsession. Okay, I have a lot of obsessions. But dates are definitely up there on the list. Can you believe that I never even tried one until a few weeks ago? I was in Shopper’s Drug Mart, of all places, with a sweet tooth on a Saturday night. Since giving up refined sugar and gluten almost two years ago, and living a mostly sugar-free lifestyle, I really don’t have much of a sweet tooth anymore. But for some reason, I felt like something, and after reading the packages of several types of chocolate or even gluten-free cookies (if you want to get depressed, just look at what’s actually in junk food), I discovered a package of Medjool dates. They weren’t a million dollars like usual so I bought them.
OMG. Dates are basically candy in the form of dried fruit. They taste just like caramel, and one or two are perfect if you want to satisfy your sweet tooth. I don’t eat candy anymore so this was an amazing discovery.
So this smoothie is a healthier, breakfast-approved version of banana pie: it’s got coconut milk, a sweet banana, nutmeg and cinnamon, and two dates. You won’t miss the cream or sugar typically found in the dessert version.
Tomorrow I’m sharing my Pizza Night Chicken recipe, which is my answer for any pizza cravings I’ve had since giving up dairy and gluten. If pizza is your favourite meal, I don’t think you’ll be disappointed.
- ½ cup almond milk
- 1 banana
- 2 dates, pitted and chopped
- pinch of nutmeg
- 1 tbsp chia seeds
- Blend the almond milk, banana, dates and nutmeg together. Pour into a glass and stir the chia seeds in before enjoying.
