How Podcasts Can Make You More Productive

‘I’ve recently gotten really into podcasts and that’s where today’s post comes from. As a freelance writer and editor, I spend my day working in my apartment, and while listening to music (specifically Taylor Swift, Carly Rae Jepsen or Justin Bieber) never gets old, sometimes you need a change.

I’ve found that listening to podcasts really has made my productivity soar. And so that’s what I’m talking about today. Here are 5 ways that podcasts can make you more productive.

1.) They Help You Focus

You would think that listening to people talking would make it really hard to focus. But it’s actually the opposite. After all, people have been listening to radio at work forever, and there’s usually some chatting going on there and not just music.

Podcasts can help you focus by being really awesome background noise. Plus you get the bonus of being able to work while learning more about whatever subject you’re into, from pop culture to health to food.

Some of my faves? The Paleo View, Balanced Bites, Blissful Bites, Colorful Eats, Fed and Fit and Gilmore Guys (shout-out to any Gilmore Girls fans out there). I’ll choose one podcast and just let the episodes play for hours while I work. It helps me focus like nothing else, and plus I get to learn all kinds of awesome facts about being healthy (or in the case of GG, I get to laugh hysterically).

2.) They Make You Feel Less Alone

Sounds kind of cheesy but it’s true. If I’m sitting in my apartment working, it helps to hear some human voices. And when you listen to health or food focused podcasts like I do, they usually feature two women chatting, and it’s honestly like hanging out with some friends.

Music can help cheer you up for sure, but podcasts just feel like more of a real experience.

3.) They Inspire You

It’s amazing to hear people’s life stories, health journeys, and even just how they motivate themselves on a daily basis to stay healthy and happy and do work that they absolutely love. I get inspired every single time I listen to my favourite podcasts and I’m sure I’m not the only one. It’s a truly magical and amazing thing.

4.) They’re A Lot Of Fun

Let’s face it, no matter how much you love your job, you have days where you’re tired or not feeling super great or you need some extra motivation. Those days are the ones when I especially turn to podcasts. They put me in a good mood, and make me laugh, and make me smile. And suddenly I remember why I love what I do so much and I’m totally okay to keep working for a few more hours.

5.) They’re A Good Reward

Of course your love for your career should be reward enough, and it often is. You get a lot of satisfaction out of how much your job lights you up every day. But when you want to listen to a new episode of your favorite podcast or you have a certain topic that you want more info about, that can be kind of like a good reward for getting down to work. And hey, whatever helps get the job done, right?

Do you love podcasts as much as I do? What are your favourites?

  1. I love podcasts when I’m driving! Current fave is “Guys We F***ed” aka the anti slut shaming podcast. I love the attention the girls bring to under represented issues

    1. Thanks so much for sharing your fave! I haven’t heard of that one but it sounds awesome!
