#throwbackthursday: The Nostalgia Of Stranger Things

The 80s was a pretty magical time.

Okay, I don’t know that for sure because I was born in 1989 (aka the same year as Taylor Swift).

But I can tell from some pretty awesome pop culture touchstones like John Hughes movies… and from the latest Netflix craze, Stranger Things.

I was initially interested in watching this show after reading an interview with with Winona Ryder in Entertainment Weekly. It’s technically her big comeback, but since it stars a bunch of super talented and charming young kids, she gave credit where credit is due and said they really are the heart of the series.

As you can probably tell from the title, Stranger Things is all about the supernatural. It tells the story of a town dealing with the disappearance of a young boy, Will, and the appearance of a young girl named Eleven with magical powers.

It’s also a pretty smart, well-crafted and hilarious show. My favourite line from the pilot: when the police chief says, “Mornings are for coffee and contemplation.”

Yes. I totally agree.

Storytelling that can make us think, make us feel, and make us super nostalgic for an earlier time is always a good thing in my books. This show works so well because it’s just really smart. It both makes you feel it’s still the 80s and also makes you realize how much time has passed and how many things have changed in our culture since then.

If you haven’t watched it yet, give this 8 episode show a try! You won’t regret it.

Has Netflix ever let you down before???

  1. haven’t seen Stranger Things yet, but I hear theres a lot of X-Men comics references, so I should catch up! (Also, have you seen Show me a Hero? It’s brilliant, and it was the real start of the Winona Ryder comeback – she’s excellent in it, so if you like her, give it a go)
